Comparison of Popular Shareware Resume Programs
The following is a comparison of SRP to three other popular shareware resume
programs: Resume Professional, Resume Master, and Resume Shop. This comparison
is provided to allow the user to decide which resumerogram provides them with
features the user needs. All attempts to highlight features of the
"competition" were made.
Note that a scaled-down version of Resume Shop, called One Page Resume (OPR) is
available but is not compared here. It is freeware, and seems to be nearly the
exact same thing as Resume Shop except it uses odd colors and a less attractive
interface. I was able to lock my system using OPR, and once back up, the print
out printed on 7 pages (one page for each section - Heading, Objective, Work 1,
Work 2, etc.).

1. High School and College Records entered in same type of data entry screen.
2. Right and Left Movement Only.
3. ENTER saves screen.
4. No option to restrict records, but user may edit resume screen and print
result.
5. Shows resume in sections, not in true WYSIWYG (as far as WYSIWYG can go
for a text application!).
6. Ability to print to file listed, but did not appear to work - created
file, but placed no data in file.
7. A few problems here: on my system, no cursor appeared on the edit screen,
making edit difficult. Also, though the result of the edit may be printed, it
cannot apparently be saved. Changes, then, must be made each time a data
entry change is made or each time the data file is reloaded.
8. Resume Shop prints its file resume to a file called ASC.DAT, overwriting
the previous contents of the file.
Notes about Resume Format:
SRP prints only that data requested on the Print Options screens. It formats
the data to look as though it was typed in by you by hand - short lines are
joined together to fill out a line on the page. Extra spaces within sentences
are stripped from the final form. The order of printing is fixed at General
Data, Objective, Education, Military, Employment, Personal, and References.
Resume Professional prints all data as entered. It uses a line-by-line format,
with one piece of data per line. There are other oddities, such as the ability
to have mulitple objectives which print whether they are filled in or not.
Heavy hand-editing would be required to get the resume into a polished, ready
to send format. See Notes 6 and 7 above as well.
Resume Master prints data in a bulleted fashion. On the Chrono resume, each
achievement is listed underneath the employer name. Data is printed as typed
(including extra spaces, carriage returns, etc). The bullet used for the
screen output is a block. In the printed versions, though, it is a tilde (~)
by default - this can be changed. The Objective, Employer Names, and School
Names are capitalized, despite how they were entered into the database.
Inputing normal resume data, I was never able to get the program to print on
the full page, as the bulleted method of job description does not allow enough
data entry.
Resume Shop's resume is passable, but is best used as a guide for general
format, and then edited within a word processor. No paragraph flow is done -
data prints as entered in each record. Has option to print an Education
Oriented resume, but since the Educational data entry screens are sparse,
there is little gained by placing the Education records first on the page.
Be sure NOT to use quotation marks ( "" ) in the data entry fields, as the
data file fields are enclosed by quotation marks, and entering them in your
data throws the program off.
